We do it every night at the fight club. [May. 24th, 2008|12:56 am]
Until recently, I couldn't remember the last time I got sick. It was at least seven years ago.

Last Thursday, I felt great.

Last Friday I still felt great other than a sore throat that was irritated by eating. I went to Chicago that evening.

Saturday was a bit worse for the throat but I was still fine. Not wanting to upset anyone, I didn't tell anyone, especially considering I couldn't really do anything as I was to embark on my Amtrak journey on Sunday. Tristan and I ate at Buffalo Joe's in Evanston and the wings were really good.

Sunday I ate some Chicago deep-dish pizza and then left on a train in the evening. Little did I know this food would have to last a while. After 26 hours and three trains, I arrived in Boston Monday night where my mother picked me up. I ate nothing that day.

Monday morning I woke up and tried to stand up to walk upstairs but I fell over. It appeared that I had lost more than a few degrees of peripheral vision. Hella tight. My mom made me go to the doctor and they said I had some serious strep or tonsillitis or something so I got some Amoxycillin. Apparently I had a terrible fever as well.

On Tuesday I felt much like Monday except notably worse in every category, despite being on lots of medicine.

Wednesday brought some relief, but not enough to eat.

On Thursday, I was able to walk around confidently again and even ate some soup that evening.

Today, I kicked all sorts of ass. I felt really good, ate lots of food, and fixed the lawnmower. I might be done with this.

STATS THUS FAR:

Pills swallowed since Tuesday= 82

Peak temperature= 102.4 fahrenheit

Longest hours without food= 101

Weight lost= 8 pounds

Approximate value of lost wages during potential work= $200

What a depressing entry.

And that should be the last... thing. [Apr. 4th, 2008|06:15 am]
Last night at about midnight, Scott was lamenting the 7:00 a.m. lifting session he had to attend with the track team and was wondering how he could possibly wake up for it. Feeling rather industrious, I suggested that he stay up until he had to go. We just finished watching all three Back to the Future movies.

Having never seen them in rapid succession and not at all for many years, I never realized that the three films are, in fact, absolutely identical.

I don't know what the time stamp function will show you, but it's 6:18 a.m. now and I don't know what to do with myself until class at 11:00. This was not a well thought out plan.

Concrete schoolyard: [Feb. 26th, 2008|01:09 am]
Charles reviews his things-

My apartment: A 4-bedroom unit in the West Town complex on Mortensen. The low price is quite pleasing and it has enough space that all of it is used but we don't feel cramped, especially since Neal's departure has left us a spare room. It's a bit too far from campus to be convenient, but the bike ride is nice when the weather's decent and despite some frankly quite ridiculous parties, we haven't had a noise complaint since October. It's a pretty good place overall but there are a number of minor annoyances like the shitty oven and construction in the area; it's nearly definite I'll be living somewhere else next year though. 6.2/10

My car: A 1993 BMW 740iL. I'm quite proud of it as it is a rare find in its trim level, mileage and color. Despite a series of mechanical issues last year, it's all been sorted out and has been running perfectly for a long time now. It's right about at the sweet spot of modern engineering but still allowing for repairs and modifications by a person with my knowledge and available equipment. It achieves on the low side of decent gas mileage and isn't kind to rear tires but it's really comfortable and faster than nearly all of my friend's cars. 8.75/10

My laptop: An HP L2000 ordered in March of 2006. Obviously in computer years it's been dead for like three centuries, but in my opinion it's held up pretty well. I got it with pretty high-end specs and options for the time of its creation so it's got Bluetooth capability, a 64-bit processor, two huge batteries, and some other crap. The biggest block I've been running into is the hard drive which is only like 70GB. Anywho, it's been up to every task I've set for it and plays Half Life 2 at moderate graphics settings without crashing and the batteries still last over four hours. Last year I had it serviced for free by the tech solutions people at Durham when it was acting really shitty and it's been great since then. 7.9/10

My Bed: A twin size mattress with atop a box spring on a metal frame, purchased approximately spring of 2002. Disappointingly, I fit more comfortably in the bed in my old dorm from last year. It's about six inches shorter than I'd like, and could stand another eight inches or so of width. Additionally, the mattress is a bit old and has been used by persons larger than myself, so it's getting worn. I've got one of those egg-crate foam implements between the sheet and the mattress to alleviate the situation, but the underlying issues remain. The bed works and fits the space I have in my room but leaves me wondering what could be. 3.7/10

My camera: A Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 purchased in March of 2006. This camera has documented many of the ridiculous adventures it has accompanied me on. During its travels, the camera has been subjected to the following abuses: dropping from the roof of a house, burial in sand, submerging in water, numerous botched catches when thrown, blistering heat, freezing cold, being tread upon, use as a hammer, and whatever wear imparted by residing in my pocket during extreme maneuvers. As a result, I sometimes have to pop the lens assembly back on track, the screen has an abundance of scratches, and one side is made of duct tape. Disappointingly, it only has 3X optical zoom, and it's just a bit larger than I'd like for this type of camera. Six megapixels has nearly always been adequate, but it's a bit low by today's standards. It can be tricky to avoid taking blurry pictures in certain situations, but by now I've got a good feel for it. On my computer I have saved over 6,000 images from this camera, digitally reinforcing a few years of memories. 7.1/10

We died, they remixed: [Feb. 23rd, 2008|10:17 pm]
Today was the greatest day of my entire life. I received an envelope from the recycling plant I work at in Maine. Enclosed was a letter that read the following:

"Dear Charles,

During a recent audit of our payroll company it was discovered that a typo by the payroll company caused erroneous child support payments to be deducted from your wages earned at Count & Crush, LLC. Enclosed please find a refund check payable to you in the amount of $416.00. This amount represents a total refund to you of all erroneous monies deducted."

Shit yeah they thought I was a deadbeat dad, but since I'm not I get hella cash.

Spartacus and Phrygia: [Dec. 10th, 2007|03:36 am]
The series of dreams I had last night:

- The first was notably from a first-person viewpoint, in color with sound. I was standing in a subway station of some sort that looked fairly similar to the place where Neo defeats Agent Smith in the Matrix. In the beginning, I wasn't doing anything, but then a train full of people came by and stopped. I saw a door open and a man jumped out, and as he jumped, I shot him. Not sure why, but felt compelled. This man wasn't anyone I know, but he looked kind of like Roman Abramovich. When I shot him he fell, and I walked over and shot him until my gun had no more bullets and the man was far more dead than necessary. The rest of the people on the train then exited and they all congratulated me on their way out, but I felt really terrible.

- In the next dream, Bill and I were driving to Maine in his car, except it wasn't his car in real life. This car was a 1989-ish BMW 3-series. I can't say for sure since it was a dream, but I had the feeling that we were about halfway there when the car broke down. After getting towed to a repair shop, the mechanic there told us that the only way to fix the car would be to have the motor taken out of my car and transplanted into Bill's car. Obviously this is insane but seemed perfectly logical during the dream. Feeling compelled to get to Maine, Bill and I decided we had to go through with the procedure. Unfortunately, the mechanic told us that it would cost a dollar and we found that between us, Bill and I didn't have any money. I think the dream ended around there.

- Later, I found myself in a fairly nondescript hallway in a group of people, most of whom were on Iowa State Ultimate Club or other people I met at a party on Saturday. We were just standing around, all wearing winter coats and such as though we had either just come inside or would be going shortly. I started calling each of these people on their cell phones even though they were right by me. When they answered I wouldn't have anything to say, and one by one they became annoyed and left. After the last person went away the dream ended.

-Lastly (that I can remember), I was sitting on a chair in the living room of my old house in Ames talking to Sean, telling him about how Bill's car broke down on the way to Maine, how my car doesn't have a motor anymore, and how difficult it was for us to come up with that dollar we needed. I'm really disappointed I didn't say how we got that dollar, just that it was hard.

Meteor Garden Ending Song: [Nov. 9th, 2007|12:41 am]
Yesterday for dinner I had a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in addition to a Hy-Vee frozen pizza. According to the nutrition information, the box of Macaroni has three servings per container, and the pizza is actually four servings.

Conclusion: I ate seven dinners at once.

Green Tambourine: [Oct. 15th, 2007|08:33 pm]
Today as I was returning home from school, I was riding my bicycle up Welch Avenue. In the other lane, coming down Welch Avenue, I saw a black Lexus GS. The Lexus slowed down as it neared the intersection, and the lady driving opened the window and tossed out the remains of her cigarette, prompting me to stop right next to her and say, "Excuse me ma'am, but I believe you dropped your cigarette. I wouldn't want you to forget that."

Ten Thousand Lines: [Aug. 27th, 2007|02:27 am]
Today the neighbors below us in #214 spent an uncalled for amount of time vibrating our floor with their "music." Not one to take this sitting down (since the couch was oscillating anyway), I hooked together my stereo amplifier, two 40" floorstanding speaker towers, Scott's 12" 50W guitar amp, and Neal's 10" 20W guitar amp. I then re-oriented all of these speakers so they were face-down, directly on the floor. Using a mess of cables and adaptors, I connected all this equipment to my laptop and introduced the enemy to Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" followed by "The Final Countdown" and then into the last two minutes of "November Rain." About midway through the last solo, I felt three hard thumps from below. I turned down my music and discovered their music had stopped.

The neighbors ain't got shit on me.

Also of note: look at the police blotter for today (http://www.midiowanews.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=18749702&BRD=2700&PAG=461&dept_id=554188&rfi=8)
and you will an item concerning a resident of that apartment, "Aug. 25: Tinika Fleming, 4810 Mortensen Road No. 214, was arrested on warrant for failing to appear in court on charges of trespassing."
